What is the Chateaugay Brainardsville Fire District?

The Chateaugay Brainardsville Fire District (CBFD) is an independent unit that ensures fire and ambulance services are available to the residents of the Town and Village of Chateaugay and the Brainardsville area of the Town of Bellmont. Established under New York State Municipal Law, the CBFD has the authority to tax residents of the covered communities.
      The tax, which appears on the January tax bill, funds the Fire Department and Ambulance Squad. In other words, the tax money:

• provides and maintains the fire station

• buys the fire trucks and ambulance vehicles;

• pays for the fuel that runs the vehicles along with

• the protection gear the fire fighters wear when fighting a fire;

• all the supplies used on the ambulances;

• and pays for the heat, electricity and everything else needed to provide fire and ambulance services.

The Fire District is managed by an elected Board of Fire Commissioners. It is their responsibility to organize, operate, maintain, and equip fire companies. They are charged with adopting rules and regulations, prescribing the duties of the members, enforcing discipline, and providing for public drills, parades, funerals, inspections, and reviews of the fire department. Commissioners do not fight fires unless they are also members of the fire department.

Meetings are held the second Tuesday of the month at the Fire Station. Residents of the covered communities and the area are invited and welcome to attend the meetings.
